So for those of you who’ve been with me since the beginning (thanks BTW), you may remember a post of my fave showtunes. Well, here it is again, brand-spanking new!
The Legend Of Miss Baltimore (Crabs)
Velma Von Tussel is supervising the auditions for the Corny Collins dance show with her daughter Amber (Hairspray Live!). When it’s Tracy’s turn to try out, she lets loose this whopper of a song. It’s basically a ballad as to why she’s so insane. She wants her daughter to win Miss Baltimore, because she won it in her glory days. “Those broads thought they’d win, if a plate they would spin in their dance, haha! Not a chance!” My fave version is sung by Kristen Chenowith, so it gets way too high for me at the end.
Washington On Your Side
The rise of the three Southern Democratic Republicans (Hamilton)! Jefferson, Madison, and Burr all get together to figure out how to take down Hamilton a couple of notches for various reasons. Madison wants to stand up for the South, Burr wants to stand up to his mouth, cause if there’s a fire you’re trying to douse you can’t put it out from inside the house. I love this because it’s really fast rapping that all weaves together, and the three-part harmonies are so tight!
She’s In Love
Aquata, Adriana, Arista, Attina, Adella, Alana, and Flounder all get together to figure out what’s wrong with Ariel (The Little Mermaid Broadway Version). They conclude she’s in love. There’s loads of good harmonies jammed into this song, and the kid who sings for Flounder is way talented. I love this song more than you all know.
So Long Dearie
This is honestly the best breakup song ever (Hello Dolly Movie Version). Dolly the matchmaker has tried for the entire show to get Horace Vandergelder (the well-known half-millionaire) to fall in love/marry her. And he just doesn’t get it. So she sings this number in which she dumps him, and struts away in a flourish. Yes, this is Barbara Streisand. And it’s honestly the funniest thing ever, because he just stand there in utter confusion/awe and does nothing. It’s amazing.
I had to limit myself to just one Phantom of the Opera song. This is honestly one of the best songs in the whole movie. This is where Carlotta, the diva opera singer, returns to the theatre. They are basically groveling until its her turn to sing. “Prima Donna your song shall never die…” My personal favorite line in the background is “leading ladies are a trial”. Anyone who’s ever been in a play or musical knows that’s true. I should know too. I have leading lady aspirations, and I’m one heck of a trial when I’m being difficult. Don’t even try to hit the high notes on this one. You’ll break your vocal cords, or sound like a possessed bird. Either way, you won’t be a fabulous opera diva.
